Resources for Breast Cancer in Arizona

#LatinaStrong #LatinaDoctorAz

Today I had the privilege of spending a few hours with other strong Latinas bringing awareness to breast cancer and the resources that are available in our state.

One cancer survivor story resonated with me because she described how she basically went through all the motions at the time of her cancer diagnosis, but after she was determined to be disease-free, it was as if she was thrown back into the world with no other follow-up. But not so much for physical follow up because of course she had those with her specialists, but more for her mental follow up. She called what she needed- #CancerRehab.

Breast cancer survivors of course are strong women, but they obviously need support not only physically but also mentally. From this panel and talk I felt like there is a lot of resources available in our state of Arizona, but not many women know where they can turn, to continue to have that emotional and mental support that they deserve.

From this panel, I hope all women gained the knowledge that mental health is just as important if not more important than physical health. Breast awareness like I discussed is recommended more than self breast exams. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, please get genetic testing. (Post on this coming soon!)

Today I learned a little more about where to direct women to resources in our state for breast cancer prevention, treatment and support including:

  • Free mammograms are available at the University of Arizona in Tuscon and at St. Joe's Hospital for women with financial hardships.

  • Mammograms are available for $50 at SimonMed during the month of October for women with financial hardships.

  • The Beyond Cancer Series also available at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, which provides resources and networking for anyone affected by cancer. https://cancercenter.arizona.edu

  • Valleywise Health, previously Maricopa Integrated Health System is working with the community to provide resources to women with financial hardships such as breast cancer treatment.

  • Cancer Support Community Arizona which provides support throughout a cancer journey. They offer 100+ programs each month, including health & nutrition, support groups, therapeutic arts, education seminars & workshops, youth/teen & family programs and fun community events! www.cscaz.org

Hope this information can help someone in our community to have the support they need from diagnosis and beyond!

If you know any other resources please comment below!! Thank you mujer!
