What are the best prenatal vitamins?!
I get this question ALL. THE. TIME!
Remember ladies, the best one is the one you actually take. My patients know I ask them at every visit if they are taking their prenatal vitamin or not. Of course this is not a substitute for a healthy and balanced diet, but it can complement what you are already eating.
A few quick tips:
Prescription prenatals are not necessarily better. If you do your research you can find an over the counter one that has all you need at a fraction of the price!
Folic acid versus folate? Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate and methylfolate is a more absorbable/bioavailable form. Talk to your doc to see if you need one versus the other. Minimum recommended amount is 400mcg.
Iron is important because most women can have anemia of pregnancy. Some gummies don’t have iron. Daily recommended amount is 27mg, but you may need extra.
Calcium and Vitamin D! Both important vitamins when growing a baby! You might need extra in addition to what your prenatal provides. Daily recommended amount is 1000mg of Calcium and 600IU of Vitamin D.
DHA which is an Omega-3 fatty acid. It plays a key role in fetal brain, eye and immune development. Daily recommended amount is 200-300mg.
Remember though, the best one is the one you actually take!!
I was contacted by a great company called Consumers Advocate who help consumers like you make informed decisions.
